Visible Spotlight - Feature Story
Are You Ready for Sarbanes-Oxley?

As companies woke up to the fact that time was running out to correct potential problems with the date change in all of their programs, there was nearly a panic in the months before Y2K. Many think the Sarbanes mandates will dwarf that of Y2K, due to the broad implications and size of the problems that need to get addressed. Companies will have to change the way they develop and manage software. Furthermore, this problem is not a one-time problem like Y2K where the change is made and the problem is corrected. This problem's roots are in the very nature of how software is developed, and will be a permanent fact of life going forward. Visible Systems' enterprise solutions will help companies comply with Sarbanes-Oxley throughout the application development lifecycle.

4th Annual Razor User's Forum

This year's Razor User's Forum will be hosted by Lockheed Martin Corporation in Denver, CO. It will be held during the first week of December 2004. More specific details will follow in an upcoming newsletter.

For Razor users who have not previously attended, the Razor User's Forum is free to all of our customers. During the forum, you will attend informal discussions about Razor's current features, Razor's upcoming enhancements, your likes and dislikes about the product and also brainstorming about possible new additions to the Razor tool set. Users also have the opportunity to speak with other Razor customers, interface with Razor staff, learn how other sites tackle their problems, and see presentations made by fellow attendees that highlight Razor's flexibility and customization capabilities.

If you plan on attending, please consider making a presentation to the group that shows how you or your site has made Razor fit your process needs. Last year, presenters received an expandable, embroidered Razor bag capable of holding files or even a laptop computer.

Tech Tip

Customizing Razor via Scripts

The examples directory in $RAZOR_HOME contains many scripts and files that we have collected and/or developed over the years. A README file in the directory provides a quick description of the usage of each file. While many of them tend to be useful, two very helpful and popular scripts follow:

must_have_issues

Must_have_issues is a script to be attached as a Before script in the Actions file. It is used for those actions that you want to require an issue relationship to have been defined by the user:

For example, you can force an issue to be related to a file upon checkout by placing the script in your Actions file as follows:

#Button Before After
#
checkout.apply $RAZOR_HOME/examples/must_have_issues n/a

must_have_issues_at_state

Must_have_issues_at_state is a Before script which forces users to attach issues at a certain state. The script as provided requires that each issue must be at the "Approved" state. You can easily edit the script to reflect your site's process flow and state transitions.
